Foreword from the President
Dear Federalit friends,
The Treaty Reform Now! Campaign is well underway. After our successful debate on 28 March, we are advancing towards the Europe Day’s celebration in Strasbourg. This will be the occasion to reinforce our message, which relies on two pillars.
First, we want to capitalise on our achievements at the Conference on the Future of Europe. We met there important allies to the Federalist cause, most of which the Citizen’s ambassadors and the civil society organisations.
Second, we still must encourage the European institution to endorse Treaty change to give a proper follow-up to the 49 recommendations of the CoFoE. The European Parliament answered positively in its resolution of 9 June 2022. The Council of the EU, however failed to answer so far. This is not acceptable.
It is time for a strong political message. We need to mobilise for treaty reform. The petition that is being circulated in your sections collected around 1300 signatures so far, with people from the European civil society, entrepreneurs, politicians, committed federalists, but also concerned citizens. We must continue.
The debate organised by the UEF and its French partners on 8 May will be this occasion. The speakers—rapporteurs of the AFCO committee on Treaty change, members of the board of the Spinelli Group, and representatives from the European and Strasbourg’s civil society—will remind us of the necessity for Treaty change. The demonstration that we will organise on Europe Day in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg aims at encouraging parliamentarians to continue their support of the reform of the treaties.
I count on your support. I count on the national and local sections of the UEF to spread the petition and its message, to engage citizens, to mobilise and to advocate for Treaty change. Go to the cities and towns—like the MFE is doing at the moment with its “Saturdays for Europe”— and spread our campaign and the petition. Only through popular support will our action for a federal, sovereign and democratic Europe prevail.
Treaty reform now!
Sandro Gozi
President of the UEF
